When I first started baking my own cakes it took a lot of trial and error to get where I am today. It was never about the fancy decorating when I was baking with my great Uncle. He made everything taste so amazing and everything was so full of love that NO ONE cared what it looked like.
However things have changed drastically in the last ten years or so, long go the days of ordering a flat cake sheet from your local grocery store with hopes they spelled birthday correctly let alone your name.
We have been introduced to some great popular cake decorating shows over the years from TLC's Cake Boss to the Netflix special Nailed it and with each show we seen the ups and downs, trials and many errors (Nailed It) and just like these bakers I have had my own.
When I look back on some of the free cakes I did when I first decided to dip my toe in the decorating world I laugh but those cakes remind me to be humble and understanding to new bakers instead of judgemental and critical.
I would make small cakes to practice on, watch video tutorials, read books and ask local bakers for some tips but honestly the best thing I ever did was, I kept going, kept working, kept practicing, kept my head up, kept baking and kept decorating.
